JULY 13, 2001: SOLAR GENERATING SYSTEM ON ASHTON TOWER ROOF NEARS COMPLETION

The Willimantic Housing Authority has been working with the Connecticut Energy Cooperative and Solar Works to install a 5kw photovoltaic generating system on the roof of John Ashton Tower. The system which includes 48 solar panels is expected to begin generating electricity this month. The solar generating system uses no storage batteries and will be tied directly to the main electrical distribution grid. It is anticipated that the amount of electricity generated should be sufficient to provide lighting for the community room, stairwells, hallways, and other common areas during daylight hours. The project is funded entirely by HUD through the Comprehensive Grant Program and will result in lower energy bills at the high-rise building. It will also contribute in a small way to helping reduce our dependence on fossil fuels through the use of a free and totally renewable resource - sunlight.
